タイトル: Uncovering Stereotypes: Intersections of Race and English Native-Speakerhood
著者: Rivers, Damian
Ross, Andrew
アブストラクト: Moore (2006) proposes that stereotypes represent a human tendency to “categorize individuals or groups according to an oversimplified standardized image and attribute certain characteristics to all members of the group”, further adding that stereotypes “are central to the formation of prejudice and the pervasive acts of violence, segregation, and discrimination directed against minority groups” (p.36). A primary motive underpinning the human inclination to categorize the social world is to more clearly form and protect boundaries between people, groups and concepts, so that individuals are more easily able, and without threat, understand who they are in relation to others via “group-distinctive stereotypical and normative perceptions and actions…[assigning]…people, including self, to the contextually relevant category” (Hogg, Terry & White, 1995, p.260). However, Lippmann (1965) asserts that stereotypes, although needed to assist in our categorization and psychological management of the social environment, may often have very little connection to the social realities or social actors they are intended to represent as, “for the most part, we do not first see, and then define, we define first and then see”, and that “we pick out what our culture has already defined for us, and we tend to perceive that which we have picked out in the form stereotyped for us by our culture" (p.59). Accordingly, it is possible to argue that the manner in which an individual views the world and the variant groups within it will be almost unavoidably stereotyped to some degree through what has been described as “a process of simplification which serves to make reality manageable and at worst, a pathological vehicle for prejudice and ill-treatment" (Oakes, Haslam & Turner, 1994, p.2).
